The legal status of cannabis in Canada has made things a lot easier for medicinal and recreational users in the country. But you cannot dive in without knowing the rules and regulations of legal cannabis because there are still some you have to follow to stay on the right side of the law. While there are specific guidelines for cannabis consumers in each province, some regulations apply everywhere in the country. It makes sense to abide by them and have safe and enjoyable experiences. Let us highlight them for you.

You have to be of the right age

Adults are allowed to buy, possess, use and grow recreational cannabis in the country. But the legal age may vary from state to state. The minimum legal age to buy and possess it is 19 all over Canada. However, Quebec is an exception where you can do it legitimately once you are past 21.  You also have to be sure about not distributing cannabis to anyone who is below the legitimate age.

Be careful about quantities

Another aspect you cannot overlook is the quantity you can buy or own. All states allow you to purchase and possess a maximum of 30 grams at any point. But you can have lots more at home in most locations. For example, you can have up to 1,000 grams at home in British Columbia, while Manitoba has no limit to home possession.

Buy only from a legitimate seller

The government has designated many private retail stores and online dispensaries to sell cannabis legally. You have to stick only to a licensed store to pick your supplies. Buying from elsewhere is legal and can get you in trouble. You can also shop for accessories like vape pens from legitimate stores. Ensure that you carry documents to validate your age when you step into a store to replenish your supplies.

Avoid consuming in public places

It is best to consume cannabis only at home because you may have to pay a hefty penalty if caught smoking in public in some locations. British Columbia prohibits it around children, in cars, and the places where tobacco smoking is not allowed. Further, you cannot use it in places such as retirement homes and long-term care homes, schools, playgrounds, parks, and childcare centers.

Follow the driving rules

You have to stay off the wheel after consuming cannabis because it can lead to a hefty fine and even imprisonment for driving under influence. A quantity of more than five nanograms of THC in your blood while driving can get you into trouble. Also, be careful while transporting cannabis across the state. It should be out of reach of the driver and passengers. So pack your supplies and lock them up securely in the trunk.

As long as you follow the rules, there is hardly a chance that you will get into trouble with authorities in Canada. But make sure that you know the laws of your state before going ahead. Staying on the right side of the law is as important as picking the right products and taking the right dose.
