Andrew Margolin, the former executive director for prime brokerage consulting for Asia at Goldman Sachs, has joined Gaurav Grover’s Trikon Asset Management as COO, AsiaHedge has learned.
The firm was also granted its asset management license by The Hong Kong Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) on the 24th of August, paving the way for the new manager to approach third party investors to invest in a co-mingled fund seeded by a consortium of investors led by HS Group.
The Asia-focused long/short equity fund manager was formed by Grover last December after working for more than seven years at Moore Capital Management where he was a senior portfolio manager and managing director for Asia.
Margolin joins Grover and Jain Abhishek Shantilal, Grover’s colleague at Moore Capital Asia and at TPG Axon Capital at the firm. Shantilal is one of the four investment analysts at the Trikon team together with three others from Marshall Wace, JANA and Indus Partners.
Before joining Goldman more than eight years ago, Margolin was COO at hedge fund Kiitis Capital Management and before that chief financial officer at Gordon Laboratories.
Trikon is launching in a highly challenging environment for most startups given the volatile markets because of the worsening US-China trade war, weakness in emerging due to the strengthening of the US dollar and fears of more interest rate hikes in the US.
Another former Moore Capital manager who also received funding from HS Group this year is UK-based Hassim Dhoda whose Soloda Investment, a global macro vehicle, is understood to have started trading in June.
Trikon declined to comment.
