Key Takeaways
  • • The British Business Bank's UK Venture Capital Financial Returns 2026 report found UK VC funds (2002-2021 vintages) posted a pooled TVPI of 1.78x, matching the US at 1.78x and ahead of the rest of Europe at 1.67x.
  • • Realised returns lag the US: UK pooled DPI stands at 0.62x versus 0.83x in the US and 0.65x in the rest of Europe, partly because UK funds in the dataset were on average 21 months younger.
  • • Among 2020-2024 vintages, UK funds generated a pooled TVPI of 1.40x, versus 1.24x in the US and 1.27x in the rest of Europe, with returns largely unrealised.
  • • The UK late-stage gap narrowed sharply: 2014-2019 vintages showed a 0.78x TVPI shortfall versus the US, which shrank to 0.05x (1.18x vs 1.23x) for 2020-2024 vintages.
  • • UK Private Capital CEO Michael Moore argued domestic pension funds are underinvesting in VC and called on Mansion House signatories to increase allocations.
Summary
UK venture capital has matched US long-term returns and outperformed the rest of Europe, according to new analysis from the British Business Bank. The bank's UK Venture Capital Financial Returns 2026 report found UK VC funds generated a pooled total value to paid-in capital (TVPI) multiple of 1.78x across 2002-2021 vintages, equal to the US and ahead of the rest of Europe at 1.67x.

Realised returns, however, remain weaker than in the US. UK funds produced a pooled distributions-to-paid-in capital (DPI) multiple of 0.62x, compared with 0.83x in the US and 0.65x across the rest of Europe. The bank noted that UK funds in the dataset were on average 21 months younger than their US counterparts, leaving less time to realise investments and distribute capital.

More recent UK vintages have performed strongly. Funds from 2020-2024 generated a pooled TVPI of 1.40x, compared with 1.24x in the US and 1.27x in the rest of Europe, and UK median and upper-quartile returns for these vintages also exceeded US and European equivalents. The report cautioned that returns for younger funds remain largely driven by unrealised value rather than cash distributions. The report also showed the UK's late-stage gap had narrowed significantly. For 2014-2019 vintages, UK late-stage funds delivered 1.62x against 2.40x in the US, a 0.78x gap. For 2020-2024 vintages, UK late-stage funds reached 1.18x against 1.23x in the US, narrowing the gap to 0.05x. UK generalist funds in the latest cohort recorded pooled TVPI of 1.91x versus 1.20x in the US. At the early stage, UK funds delivered pooled TVPI of 1.85x across 2002-2024 vintages, against 1.81x in the US and 1.84x in the rest of Europe.

British Business Bank chief investment officer Leandros Kalisperas said the research shows "the UK is increasingly closing the gap, matching US returns overall and outperforming among the latest generation of funds." UK Private Capital chief executive Michael Moore argued the findings strengthen the case for greater domestic institutional investment, saying UK pension funds "have real scope to seize more of this opportunity" and calling on Mansion House signatories to act. The British Business Bank said institutional investors need effective routes to access VC at scale, citing Venture Link and the British Growth Partnership, whose first fund reached a £200m first close this year.
