Summary
Joe McCann, a 45-year-old Miami-based cryptocurrency fund manager and founder of Asymmetric investment firm, is under active investigation by Zanzibar police following the death of his 31-year-old fiancée, Ashly Robinson—a U.S.-based lifestyle influencer known online as Ashlee Jenae. Robinson was found unresponsive on April 9 at the luxury Zuri Zanzibar resort during what was intended to be a celebratory trip marking her birthday and recent engagement. She was pronounced dead at a hospital the following day.
Zanzibar authorities have confirmed Robinson died by suicide, attributing the death to a "misunderstanding" between the couple. According to police reports, McCann and Robinson had been quarreling frequently since arriving on April 4. Hotel staff separated them twice during their stay due to heated disputes, with McCann relocated to a separate villa approximately 10 minutes away on April 8. Robinson was discovered in a closet with a belt around her neck hours later. Police have withheld McCann's passport and requested he remain in Tanzania pending completion of forensic autopsy results. While authorities stated McCann is not currently suspected of wrongdoing, the investigation remains open.
Robinson's family has disputed the suicide determination, expressing skepticism about both the conclusion and the timeline of events. Her mother, Yolanda Endres, stated to CBS News that Robinson appeared happy in the days before her death and that "it doesn't make any sense." The family reported limited communication from McCann after he contacted them to say Robinson was in the hospital, with McCann reportedly indicating the incident occurred approximately 11 hours before he notified them. The family subsequently established a GoFundMe page seeking $50,000 to cover travel costs, funeral arrangements, and related expenses.
The investigation carries additional significance given McCann's prominence within the cryptocurrency investment community. Asymmetric recently announced liquidation of its Liquid Alpha Fund following substantial losses, creating a backdrop of financial turbulence during the investigation. The Zuri Zanzibar resort issued a statement expressing sympathy and confirming full cooperation with local authorities and the U.S. Embassy. Deputy Director of Investigations Zuberi Chembera declined to provide further comment, citing ongoing investigative proceedings.
