Summary
Grayscale has expanded in-kind transfer options to 10 of its crypto exchange-traded products, according to a report from Stocktwits. Until now, investors generally had to sell their crypto for cash before buying into a Grayscale fund. Under the in-kind mechanism, eligible investors can hand over the coins themselves and receive fund shares in return. The option is accessed through authorized participants, the large trading firms that create and redeem ETF shares.

The covered products include the Grayscale Bitcoin Mini Trust ETF (BTC), Ethereum Staking Mini ETF (ETH), Solana Staking ETF (GSOL), XRP Trust ETF (GXRP), Hyperliquid Staking ETF (HYPG), and Zcash ETF (ZCSH). Per Grayscale, the Bitcoin Mini Trust ETF has the largest approximate minimum at over $364,800, while the Solana fund's minimum is about $80,300. The expansion extends the in-kind option beyond earlier approval-driven changes to how authorized participants move coins in and out of funds, and reaches products tied to smaller tokens such as Zcash, Hyperliquid and Sui.

Grayscale's Steve Vanourny, Head of Index, said that "as digital assets mature, investors are seeking more secure and efficient ways to manage their crypto holdings," adding that "in-kind investing bridges direct crypto ownership and traditional portfolio management." He also cited "growing cybersecurity threats, including self-custody and DeFi exploits" as reasons institutional custody is increasingly valuable.

The move follows Grayscale's push to place its funds in front of financial advisors. In September, the firm launched its Digital Assets Next Gen model, a Bitcoin-free portfolio built from several funds now open to in-kind transfers. As of August 31, the Ethereum Staking Mini ETF held the largest weight in that model at 42.34%, followed by the XRP (GXRP) and Solana (GSOL) funds.

The approach is not entirely new for Grayscale. Before the Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (GBTC) converted to an ETF, it sold shares to accredited investors in private placements in exchange for Bitcoin, according to the trust's annual filing. Those shares carried a minimum six-month holding period.
